as for my experience I didn't need an activation code for SDL Trados 2006. You should only have your licence file in one of the folders and that's all. If you install the 2007 version you are asked to write the activation code but not in the installation procedure of the 2006 version.
Even if the software works and you don't have any problems try to send an e-mail to the support center in order to understand why you need it.
